OVO Col 1 Award Winning Series: OUR VERY OWN: Locked up Aproad - with Julius J. Levy (click my name)From all walks of life, people explore the experience of migration and immigration. Although the reasons may differ for all, the desires are often similar; people want to know what it is like elsewhere and what opportunities are there. Caribbean nationals are no exception to the rule and as island countries; our nationals have been migrating for business, scholastic and social opportunities for centuries. At least one of our nationals can be found in every country around the world. Not only do we exist in these parts, but our culture and styles have remained adaptive and at times addictive to the world around us.Sadly, this legacy of migration like everything else comes with its price and technicalities. Our nationality and heritage sadly, are often highlighted when we find ourselves on the wrong side of the law.No one can and should be blamed for our personal errs; but there lie unique details and facts that our fellow nationals need to become aware and remain conscious of; and so in each story, our very own: locked up abroad seeks to showcase stories of caribbean nationals who have been locked up outside their country and have successfully redeemed themselves.

OVO Col 2 Award Winning PresenterJulius J. LevyJulius J. Levy. Born in St. Elizabeth Jamaica where he spent his childhood and adolescent years. Julius was a student of the Burnt Savannah Primary school and served as a Boy Scout with the highest rank for two years. A year later he was duded the youngest Boy Scout leader in the Caribbean. Julius was also entrusted with the position of deputy head boy for his final year at primary school.He later went on to Black River High school where he also advanced in his service from a Boy Scout to a Cadet. The years he spent at Black River High was filled in hard work as a business student with big expectations from his parents. He gained popularity as a singer at the various events, school functions and by actively participating in activities that would put him in the limelight.As a teenager, Julius was also actively involved in his community in the Church, dance group Boyz Boyz but one of the defining activities Julius was involved in was the gospel singing group Bobby and the Gospel Wailers. The gospel group was named by Julius as the lead singer with the nick name Bobby A name he cherished as it was given to him by his late mother.Bobby and the Gospel Wailers would travel to many parishes in Jamaica singing at Churches, conventions, concerts and other events. This was one of the highlights of his teenage years. After high school, Julius started his working days at a hotel in the entertainment department where he and others would entertain hotel guests. Julius later went on to teach at Advanced Computing; teaching basic computing to the local community. The next chapter of his life would take him to England where he studied Advanced Computing at a local college, gaining distinctions and an Association of Computer Professionals (ACP). In his pursuit for a better education, Julius continued his studies at Bexley College in Kent where he achieved credits and distinctions on the Access to Computing course with the intention to attend university; he also worked there as a Learning Resource Assistant and later a teacher on the Access to Computing course for two years.Between September 2003 June 2006 Julius completed his Bachelor of Science Honorary Degree (BSc h) in Information Systems at the University of Greenwich London England. After graduating from the University of Greenwich, Julius went on to work for a security software development company (for three years) that provided him with the opportunity to travel to many countries of the world, managing many corporate clients business security strategy and implementation.During this time Julius started the process of acquiring a PhD and becoming an entrepreneur. In 2008 Julius started conversations with colleagues about starting a company and this gave birth to Advanced Media Production (AMP) in September 2009. Now! Julius is still working towards gaining a PhD and as the General Manager and one of the CEOs of Advanced Media Production; the years ahead will be challenging and as he focuses his dedication to building a world-class organization (AMP), his struggles and successes will be balanced by the encouraging words of the distinguished poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. "The heights by great men reached and kept, were not obtained by sudden flight. But they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night."

Twas De Night Before Christmas (Bajan Style)Twas de night before Christmas, when all tru dehouse, all de fellers was tinkin 'bout puddin an' souse. De hams were all hung by de sideboard wid care, in hopes that tomorrow, there'd be nuff sweet food to share. De chil'ren were ball-up all tight in their beds, while visions of pumpkin fritters danced in their heads. You cud smell de sweet bread in de oven from far, and I had just crack a fresh bottle of Cockspur 5 Star. When out in de chicken coop there arose such a clatter. I jump up from my ottama to see wha de ram-bam was de matter. Away to the window I flew like a zr van, equip wid 2 big salt breads, holdin in my hand. The moon on de dunks tree looked so lovely an'bright, but it suddenly occured to me that I was tired as shite. When, what with my malicious eyes do I see? Wuh loss! A big musty santa-pee (ie.centepede), right by my feet! Bring de cutlass goah-blemmuh! Dis ting gine bite me! And de nex ting I look, it was up by my knee. More rapid than Winston Hall dis ting start to climb, if I had some Baygon, I knew I'd be fine. The brow of my forehead was starting to sweat, But wait! I hadda idea...I wasn't done for yet. So I grabble piece a board and give it a chop, Wax! Puhlax! Bruggadung! Brax! I would not stop. You shudda see de ting denn, it tek so much licks... It was now all over the floor, like corn beef on Crix. But Beryl was 'busing as bad as could be, 'bout how I dirty up de floor wid dead santa-pee. Ah tell she doan worry and ah tell she don fret, bout that foolish old gal like she ain hear ma yet. (Author Unknown)
Remember When...Remember. . . Making a Christmas tree from a guava branch with cotton for snow. You thought apples and grapes only grew at Christmas time. Cops and Robbers, Cowboys and Indians,keeping an eye out for soucoyant and la diablesse. Sliding down the bannister, jumping on the bed. Pillow fights. Having a pet chicken, duck, rabbit or goat and crying when it became a meal. Being tickled to death. Running till you were out of breath. Laughing so hard that your stomach hurt! Being tired from playing....remember that? Going to the Chinee shop for Trebor and a penny sweet biscuit. Remember. . . . Scratching your mother's head. Getting a penney for every gray heair you pulled out of your father's hand Fighting for the bowl when your mother made a cake. Churning coconut or custard ice cream on Sunday and licking the palette. Peeling cane with your teeth. Remember when . . . there no sneakers, only watchekongs and you washed them every Saturday and whitened them. you knew nothing of rotweillers or pit bulls; only pot hounds. a penny was a decent allowance, and another penny a huge bonus. you'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny. fashionable young ladies wore crinoline and boleros. your mother wore stockings that came in two pieces and had garters.. all of your male teachers wore ties and female teachers had buns. you had to be rich to have a car or a radio. there was no TV and you went to sleep at 7.00 o'clock. there was no designer water. laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box. Commentary: A public relations disaster for the USDecember 17, 2011By Norman GirvanStupid, petty, vindictive, short-sighted, counter-productive, a huge diplomatic faux pas. These are the some of the words that could be used to describe the US decision not to issue a special license to allow the Trinidad Hilton hotel to host the Cuba-CARICOM Summit in Port of Spain on December 8. Norman Girvan is Professor Emeritus at the University of the West Indies. He is a former Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States This was a meeting of 15 heads of state; 14 of whom lead countries with which the United States has friendly relations. Cooperation extends across a wide range of subjects, especially security. Diplomatically speaking, the US government gave each of these leaders a slap in the face. The host country, Trinidad and Tobago, is one of Washingtons best friends in the region. It is a principal supplier of natural gas to the United States and a close ally in the war on terror. It is the only CARICOM country to have been visited by President Obama, when it hosted the Summit of the Americas in 2009. Just two months ago there was a visit from US Attorney General Eric Holder, who held cordial discussions with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. The Prime Ministers -- and Trinidad and Tobagos-- hospitality have now been repaid by being acutely embarrassed in the presence of other CARICOM leaders and their Cuban guest. The official US explanation -- that the request for a special licence came too late to be properly processed -- beggars belief. How far up the chain of command did this matter go? Did it reach Secretary of State Hillary Clinton? To President Obama? Was Attorney General Holder consulted? Was Ambassador Beatrice Welters in Port of Spain brought into the picture and, if so, did she offer counsel to her superiors on the possible political fallout? Was this, as many believe, a deliberate political act meant to signal Washingtons displeasure with the cordial relations that exist between CARICOM nations and Cuba, or even to sabotage the summit? The US decision was communicated on the very eve of the meeting, forcing alternative arrangements to be hurriedly set in place. If that was Washingtons intention, it certainly backfired. In a separate statement, the assembled leaders jointly declared themselves affronted by the intrusion of the United States against the sovereignty of Trinidad and Tobago; going on to note that the action could have impacted on the success of the Summit, but thanks to the commitment and solidarity of the Member States of the Caribbean Community we can celebrate an outcome which reinforces the strong fraternal bonds between CARICOM and Cuba. The US action actually succeeded in educating and galvanising public opinion against the obnoxious extra-territorial reach of the Helms-Burton law, as well as US embargo itself. Media coverage of the action has been extensive; and uniformly negative. The Cubans on their own could hardly have accomplished such a public relations feat. The pretentiousness of the US action may be illustrated by the following example. Suppose a Trinidad and Tobago-based company were to have a contract to manage an American company based in Washington, D.C. The American company not only transacts business with the US government, it is actually owned by the US Government. It enters into particular transaction with the US government, which the Trinidad and Tobago government then seeks to nullify on the grounds that this particular transaction contravenes Trinidad and Tobago law? China: A new tourist market for Barbados to explorePublished on December 17, 2011By Shamkoe Pilé BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (BGIS) -- "Barely one decade ago, few would have predicted the likelihood that Chinese tourists could even dream of making it to the paradise-like destinations in this part of the world, nor that the Caribbean would so much as find itself in much need of China as a tourism source market." This observation was made by the Chinese Ambassador to Barbados, Wei Qiang, recently, when he addressed participants at the recently held seminar entitled: Engaging China: Options, Opportunities and Strategies, hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. Coming out of that seminar, one thing became apparent after each presenter spoke about Barbados engaging the Chinese market. That was the urgent need for Barbados to maximise its relationship with the world's most populated country and to start to penetrate their market with Barbadian goods and services. And, with the goal of attracting more tourists to this island's shores, along with the need for market diversification for the survival of the tourism industry, it has been suggested that China could provide Barbados with a completely new type of tourist. Emphasising that, "we need more investment in the tourism plant..." Sandiford further stated, "I advocate a special focus on the markets of China and East Asia which are the most promising and resilient in the world trade today and into the foreseeable future."The characteristics of Chinese tourists and the spending power of this immense group are favourable for any destination. China is now the world's second largest economy with enormous international reserves; as a result, there is a growing Chinese outbound market of 60 million visitors with a spending power of approximately $42 billion. Therefore, this would suggest that perhaps, Barbados is on the right track by seeking to actively pursue the Chinese tourist market. Read More
